Room Integrity Testing for Fire Suppression Systems in Abu Dhabi

Room integrity testing—also called enclosure integrity testing or a door fan test—checks whether a protected room can retain a gaseous fire-suppression agent for the period required by the system design. It provides evidence about enclosure leakage without discharging the installed agent.

The test is relevant to enclosed risks such as data rooms, electrical and control rooms, telecommunications spaces, archives and other areas protected by a total-flooding clean-agent system. The applicable design standard, approved drawings and authority requirements determine the exact acceptance criteria for each project.

Why enclosure integrity matters

A gaseous suppression system is designed around a required agent concentration. If openings, unsealed penetrations or other leakage paths allow the agent to escape too quickly, the system may not maintain that concentration for the required period.

A room integrity test helps the project team:

  • estimate the enclosure's leakage area;
  • assess predicted agent retention;
  • identify whether corrective sealing work is needed;
  • document the tested room condition; and
  • support commissioning, handover or periodic compliance records.

Testing should be coordinated with the suppression-system designer because the result depends on the approved system design, room volume, agent and acceptance criteria—not on a generic pass value.

When is room integrity testing required?

Testing may form part of commissioning a new clean-agent fire suppression system. It may also be requested after changes that affect the enclosure, including:

  • new cable or pipe penetrations;
  • raised-floor or suspended-ceiling alterations;
  • replacement doors, dampers or ventilation equipment;
  • room partition changes;
  • building-services upgrades; or
  • corrective work following a previous test.

Facility managers should also check whether their maintenance plan, insurer, consultant or relevant authority requires periodic retesting.

How a door fan test works

1. Review the room and system documents

The test team confirms the protected volume, suppression-system details, room boundaries, drawings and the acceptance basis. Uncertainty about the enclosure boundary should be resolved before testing.

2. Prepare the protected enclosure

The room is placed in its normal suppression-ready condition. Doors and normally closed openings are closed, while ventilation shutdowns, dampers and pressure-relief arrangements are set as required by the approved cause-and-effect strategy.

3. Install calibrated test equipment

A temporary test panel with one or more calibrated fans is fitted in a doorway. Pressure tubes and gauges measure the relationship between airflow and enclosure pressure.

4. Measure enclosure leakage

The fans pressurise and depressurise the room through a controlled series of readings. Test software uses those measurements and the system inputs to estimate leakage and predicted retention performance.

5. Investigate leakage if necessary

If the enclosure does not meet the project criterion, leakage paths can be investigated. Common locations include cable trays, service penetrations, door frames, wall junctions, raised floors, ceilings, ducts and unsealed builder's work openings.

6. Report and retest

The report records the room, equipment, test configuration, inputs, readings, result and limitations. If corrective sealing changes the enclosure, it should be retested and the new condition documented.

How to prepare for a room integrity test

Before the appointment, the responsible contractor or facility team should:

  1. provide approved suppression drawings and design information;
  2. confirm the room dimensions and enclosure boundaries;
  3. complete penetrations, doors, ceilings and raised-floor works;
  4. coordinate HVAC shutdowns, dampers and pressure-relief devices;
  5. make all protected areas accessible;
  6. avoid other work that opens the room during the test; and
  7. arrange representatives for the suppression, electrical and building-services systems where needed.

Testing an unfinished enclosure can produce a result that no longer represents the room at handover.

Common reasons an enclosure does not pass

Typical causes include unsealed cable openings, gaps below or around doors, incomplete wall-to-slab seals, open dampers, porous construction, ceiling void leakage and later modifications that were not fire-stopped or resealed.

Corrective work must be compatible with the building construction, fire stopping and services. The goal is not to seal openings indiscriminately: ventilation, pressure relief and life-safety functions must remain consistent with the approved design.

What should the test report contain?

A useful room integrity test report should identify:

  • the site, room and date;
  • the suppression system and agent information supplied for the assessment;
  • the enclosure volume and boundaries;
  • calibrated test equipment;
  • room preparation and test configuration;
  • pressure and airflow readings;
  • calculated leakage and predicted retention result;
  • stated acceptance basis;
  • observations, limitations and corrective recommendations; and
  • the tester and responsible company.

Keep the final report with the suppression-system commissioning and maintenance records.

What is a room integrity test?

Does the test release FM-200, Inergen or another agent?

No. A door fan test evaluates the enclosure without discharging the installed extinguishing agent.

Is room integrity testing the same as suppression-system maintenance?

No. It assesses the protected enclosure. The cylinders, valves, pipework, detection, releasing panel, alarms and cause-and-effect functions require their own inspection and maintenance scope.

What happens if the room fails?

Leakage paths are identified for sealing or other corrective work. The enclosure is then retested so the revised result can be documented.
